“It’s not over. You haven’t’ won [Vetto]. We haven’t given up and we’re not over yet.”

–          Asta, Black Clover (Ep.47)

The Toonami Trending Rundown is a double-feature for the nights of November 17-18, 2018 and November 24-25, 2018, as the Toonami Faithful celebrated Thanksgiving weekend. Among other great moments: Deku gets an internship with one of All Might’s mentors in Gran Torino, while Boruto investigates a shadow that has been making people in the Leaf Village go berserk, and Asta and Noelle pick themselves up after the whole team got thrashed by Vetto.

In a moment rather irregular for Toonami this time of year, Toonami opted to take its Thanksgiving Weekend marathon on the week before Thanksgiving, rather than the week after, so they did an encore run of the first 12 episodes of Attack on Titan season 3. On Tumblr, #Toonami managed to trend, while tweet counts of both #Toonami and #AttackOnTitan were spotted. Of course, with Attack on Titan currently in its off-season until April, Toonami will give AOT an encore run at 12am until MegaloBox joins, in which it will move to 2am.

We got back to the regular schedule on November 24-25, and In terms of social media buzz, On Tumblr, #Toonami would trend alongside #MyHeroAcademia and #JJBA. On Twitter, No shows made the US trends list on the night, though we did spot tweet counts for Toonami and 5 of the shows, which you can see below. And in a new segment for the trending rundown, one of our readers, @EnviroBlazerD found an internet site by @AmrRahmy that gauges the twitter buzz of TV shows. We will share the results for Toonami shows beginning this week, as we saw #MyHeroAcademia, #DragonBallSuper, #MobPsycho100, and #JoJosBizarreAdventure make the top 20 on the night.

During the Pre-Thanksgiving Marathon, Toonami showcased a game review of the newest addition of the Assassin’s Creed franchise in Odyssey. It received a 9 out of 10 score.

We’re just two weeks away until the premiere of Megalobox, and this week, Toonami showcased the teaser trailer for the upcoming reinvisioning of the Ashita no Joe franchise, which you can see below. During Anime NYC, Viz Media unveiled the voice actors taking on their roles, with Ezra Weisz serving as the ADR director for this series. The full cast announced include:

  • Joe – Kaiji Tang
  • Coach Nanbu – Jason Marnocha
  • Sachio –  Erica Mendez
  • Yuri – Lex Lang
  • Yukiko – Erika Harlacher

Sad news for Sword Art Online fans meanwhile, as it has appeared that Toonami has apparently deferred on acquiring Alternative Gun Gale Online, as during Anime NYC, Aniplex had announced that they had given Hulu and Netflix the streaming rights for the Alternative GGO dub premiere. It’s unclear whether Toonami passed at the time Aniplex offered it, or if they were outbidded for the rights (although it should be noted that Netflix and Hulu’s contract is not exclusive as they are competing services), or if Aniplex somehow snaked their way out of a right-of-first-refusal contract with Toonami if they have one (Toonami did dub premiere the previous two seasons), but either way, we have confirmed that Llenn and her pals unfortunately won’t be airing in the near future. It’s not all lost however, as Jason DeMarco has mentioned that among the highly requested shows he has received from fans lately, both Alternative GGO and Project Alicization are on that list, as we saw with the previous two seasons during their times. So we’ll just have to wait and see what Aniplex and Toonami’s plans are for SAO in the future.

If you watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade last week, you may have noticed that Funimation and Toei were flying a Goku balloon during the parade to showcase Anime’s growing popularity and to promote the upcoming Broly film.

Good news for Evangelion fans, as after years of being in a licensing limbo, it has been announced on Monday that Netflix will be acquiring the anime classic for worldwide distribution on their streaming service beginning in Spring 2019. Their license will include the original 26 episodes as well as Death and Rebirth and The End of Evangelion films.

See you again next week for another round of the better cartoon show, and while this regards a competing network, we do wish to send our condolences to the friends, family, and fans of SpongeBob Squarepants creator Stephen Hillenburg, who passed away this morning. On behalf of all animation fans everywhere, rest in peace, and thanks for the memories.
