In what could be considered a “surprising but not surprising” acquisition for some viewers given the nature of Adult Swim’s comedic programming, Toonami has picked up the hit anime comedy series Pop Team Epic, which will begin airing on June 30 at 12am Eastern. Pop Team Epic will replace DBZ Kai on the lineup, as the latter show will air its penultimate episode this upcoming Saturday. Both My Hero Academia and FLCL will also move up by 30 minutes to air at 11 and 11:30pm ET respectively.

Based on the manga series by Bkub Okawa, Pop Team Epic aired in Japan from January 7 to March 25, 2018 and has become a big fan favorite among those who saw the series across the various streaming sites it has been available on as well as being a popular source for anime related memes.

According to Anime News Network, the plot summary is as follows:

“Popuko and Pipimi are a pair of foul mouthed girls ready to take on every pop culture reference ever made. Pop Team Epic follows the pair through a series of surreal skits and short stories full of internet, movie, video game, and self-referential based comedy.”
