– Dandy, Space Dandy
The Toonami Trending Rundown for January 4-5, 2014. We begin the new year with the world premiere of the highly anticipated series Space Dandy as well as the long awaited premiere of Naruto Shippuden as while the Colts’ shocking comeback over the Chiefs and a nail-biting Saints victory over the Eagles practically broke Twitter, Toonami showed resilancy like what an NFL team’s gotta do to advance far in the playoffs, and some lucky individuals still had working trends despite it all, so I am fortunately able to say that every show managed to get onto both the US and Worldwide trending lists, making sure that Space Dandy and Naruto Shippudden would begin their respective runs on a high note. I’d like to give a major shout-out to @JMB_70056 for being fortunate enough to have a working web list and took the opportunity to help us record these trends.
You could say that the only downside, other than Twitter apparently couldn’t handle the NFL Playoffs and Toonami all in one day (and all can say about that is if that Twitter can’t do something about this, Twitter’s definitely gonna crash when the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics come around), is that Boobies didn’t trend…or even for that matter, Hooters. Regardless, all I can say is that despite that Naruto, One Piece, and InuYasha, among others had showcased groups getting divided (and ironically, Sword Art Online, which showcased an alliance attempt, has divided anime fans everywhere), the unity showcased last night is one for anime fans to be proud of as we go forward into 2014. Now we just need to hope the Nielsen box holders did their part as well.
Here’s some more good news. You’ve probably been hearing the rumors and anticipation throughout last year for this announcement, but if you haven’t heard the news or saw the special edition, we can now say that it’s official: Sword Art Online will have a second season. Yep, in the words of TOM 3.5: SAO’s back, bitches. At the moment, all we know about it is that the sub will be out sometime later this year and will cover (at least) the Phantom Bullet arc. With it’s good performance stateside, it’s a very likely possibility that Toonami will also premiere the dub of this once that’s ready in the future, but if you’ve really liked what you’ve seen so far and do want to make sure it happens, all I can say is make sure the remainder of Fairy Dance does well and let the Toonami crew and Aniplex know. Personally, you guys have my support for it to happen, but we’ll see.
This was indeed a night to celebrate for Toonami and anime fans everywhere, but now we got ourselves a big question on our hands. Can Shinichiro Watanabe pull off another legendary show with Space Dandy, and help Toonami help the anime industry spark another golden age, or will Space Dandy be a failed experiment, destined for destruction as we witness the swan song of anime’s mainstream appeal as it falls to death or complete obscurity? All I can really say is keep supporting Toonami and the anime industry overall and in the words of Spike Spiegel: “Whatever happens, happens.” Till next week, enjoy the NFL Playoffs and the BCS Championship and Stay Gold, Space Dandy.
