During an Aniplex Industry Panel at New York Comic Con this week two major lineup updates were announced for Toonami in November. Blue Exorcist will be returning to the block on November 2 at 1 a.m. and a new show titled Mashle: Magic and Muscles will be joining the block on November 9 at 12:30 a.m.
Blue Exorcist initially aired on Toonami back in February 2014. It chronicles the adventures of twin brothers Rin and Yukio Okumura, sons of Satan but raised by Father Shiro Fujimoto to protect them from evil influence. The death of Fujimoto causes Rin’s previously contained demonic powers to unleash and inspires him to join the True Cross Order to become an exorcist like Yukio and Father Fujimoto.
Since 2014, Blue Exorcist has had additional seasons that have not been shown on Toonami: the Kyoto Saga in 2017 and the Shimane Illuminati Saga earlier this year. Season 4, titled Beyond the Snow Saga, began airing on Crunchyroll earlier this month. There is no news yet as to whether Toonami will pick up the remaining seasons of the series. Blue Exorcist remains an outlier in Toonami history as one of the few series not to have shown subsequent seasons. Hopefully fans tuning in for this run on the block will demonstrate to the network interest in seeing the other season air as well.
Mashle is a comic fantasy-adventure that tells the story of a young man named Mash Burnedead who lives in a world where magic rules society. But Mash bears a secret; he doesn’t have even one ounce of magic in him. Instead, he uses his muscles to get by. When he finds himself enrolled at a magic academy he decides to become the “Divine Visionary,” an elite position in society.
Mashle does seem to have a lot in common with previous Toonami title Black Clover, however it fits a nice niche of having a magic/fantasy series on the block again. It’s also a fairly fresh series, the Manga having been in circulation since 2020 and the anime adaptation having aired only last year. As of today, two seasons have been broadcast, with the second season gaining lots of social media popularity due to the opening theme song “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” by Creepy Nuts. There currently is no news about whether both seasons will air on the block, however there is reason to be optimistic that they will. Hopefully, given how new the title is, there will be plenty of Toonami viewers who will be tuning in to the premiere.
November is going to be an exciting month, with a whole new lineup scheduled for the block. The 2nd will air the hour-long premiere of Invincible Fight Girl, followed by Blue Exorcist, One Piece, a full hour of My Hero Academia to account for daylight savings, and ending with a repeat of the Invincible Fight Girl premiere and Rick and Morty the Anime dub. The 9th will likely be the block’s standard schedule for the foreseeable future, beginning with Invincible Fight Girl, followed by Mashle, Blue Exorcist, One Piece, Dragonball Z Kai, My Hero Academia, and Rick and Morty the Anime dub.
