Over the holidays, I got the chance to pick up the web series Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist distributed by Funimation. This is not a movie, rather a short web series that looks back to the formative years of Ryu and Ken as they live a traditional warrior’s life in secluded Japan. Here’s the story: The boys are, unknowingly, the last practitioners of the ancient fighting style known as “Ansatsuken” (Assassin’s Fist). The series follows them as they learn about the mysterious past of their master, Goken, and the tragic, dark legacy of the Ansatsuken style.
To be honest, I thought this series was not only well done, but was a good start to a potentially great new look at the Street Fighter Franchise. Looking into the series, it is also surprising that it accomplished what it did with such a limited budget. This series is definitely worth having another season of and I hope the directors do make it happen. The only real negative in this series is the final fight between Goken and Goki, or shall I say lack there of. I would have liked to see this fight and even though we know the outcome already, we could have at least seen a creative fight scene between these two brothers and a better ending to set up a new season.
All in all, this series is not only a good watch, but I encourage you to pick this title up. This is why ultimately we here at Geek E Inc. Productions give Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist an 8 out of 10.
